Definition of self-respect

Self-respect is having a high regard for yourself. It is a feeling or opinion that you are important, good, and valuable. It is a belief that you deserve to be treated in a certain way, by yourself and others. For example, if you have self-respect, you believe you deserve to receive respect from other people, and therefore, you treat others with respect.

Why is self-respect important?

Self-respect is a precious commodity that must be earned before it can be truly appreciated. We are all born with an innate sense of it. It is our sense of self-respect that tells us when we are cold and hungry. It is our sense of self-respect that tells us when we are in danger. And it is our sense of self-respect that tells us when we have had enough. But sometimes we can lose our self-respect. Sometimes we let someone or something take it from us. Then we have to work to get it back.

What is self-esteem and is self-esteem the same as self-respect?

Much of what we know about self-esteem comes from the work of psychologist Dr. Nathaniel Branden. Branden defines self-esteem as “a state of mind that each of us has which indicates the degree to which we feel authentic in our conscious choices and actions.” It is this feeling of being authentic, of making conscious choices and acting on them in alignment with our values, that distinguishes self-esteem from self-respect.

What causes a lack of self-respect?

When considering what causes a lack of self-respect, it’s important to understand that the way in which you feel about yourself is often caused by the way that others see you.

Although some people may experience a lack of self-respect due to their own behavior, sometimes it takes the form of being bullied, made fun of, or abused. This can cause feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing, making you feel as if you deserve whatever mistreatment you are experiencing. It may take years to recover from experiencing abuse, but it is possible to build back your self-esteem.

How do you gain self-respect?

It’s easy to lose your self-respect. You do something embarrassing in public, for example, or you realize you’ve been acting like a jerk to your friends. But how do you get it back? You can start by reminding yourself that you’re a good person. If you’re feeling down, try writing it down on a piece of paper. Then, hang it on your wall where you can see it every day. If you’re not quite that motivated, visit a therapist. If you don’t have a therapist, ask a trusted family member or friend to help you.

Why respect is the highest value?

Respect is a difficult value to acquire, but a vital one to have. Having a certain level of respect for yourself will help you to be more confident and happy. You will make better decisions, avoid risky behavior, and feel better about yourself. Having respect for those around you will improve all of your relationships. You will be kind to others, encouraging of their talents, and you will be a better friend. As you become more respected by others, you will be less likely to be taken advantage of, and you will be less inclined to take advantage of others. You will be more understanding of others, more tolerant, and more accepting.

Define your non-negotiable values

If you could choose what to value, what would you pick? Would it be kindness, honesty, or loyalty? Maybe it would be family, music, or literature? While you might be able to list all the values you hold dear, do you know how to uphold them? Values that are easy to hold up are almost never the ones that truly matter to us. The values we hold close to our hearts are the ones that will truly help us succeed in life. These are the values you must truly live by, so you can fully trust yourself.

Respect your believes and values

Respecting our believes and values is not always easy, but it’s an important part of a happy life. Some of us try to change our believes and values by being too open and liberal. Others try to change them by being too closed and conservative. So how do we find the balance? Accepting our believes and values is not the same as agreeing with them, or bowing to them. But it does mean accepting that these ideas are important to us and that we have a right to them.

Respect your feelings

When you have a bad feeling about something, it’s hard not to beat yourself up for it. You think your bad feeling means you’re a bad person, or your bad feeling means you’re stupid, or your bad feeling means you’re weak. The truth is, you’re not a bad person for having that bad feeling, you’re not stupid for having that bad feeling, and you’re not weak for having that bad feeling. Feelings are just feelings. They aren’t good, they aren’t bad. They just are. What matters is how you react to your feelings. You can choose to respect your feelings—even if they’re bad feelings. You can choose to not let your feelings control you.

It’s a common belief that the happier you are, the more successful your life will be. The opposite is also true. When you’re unhappy, you’ll tend to make poor decisions, which can affect your health and happiness. The good thing is that you can change your life by changing how you think.
